  • 08/04/11--08:40: Slipmatt 88-89 Mix
  • DJ Slipmatt, he of the happy hardcore scene, has been a DJ for many, many years dating back to the early hardcore and rave days. He released an 88-89 mix on Soundcloud last week and it’s worth sharing. Sorry no tracklist.

Slipmatt 88-89 Mix – July 2011 by Slipmatt

This mix is several months old, but it’s intriguing because of what Kutski does with a gaggle of rave classics…pure fun.

“Everything from the original early 90′s tracks remastered, rave-breaks remixes, all mashed up with cutting edge house, techno, dubstep, breaks etc, that have the oldskool rave influence!!”

I love that it starts with a re-work of Kicks Like A Mule’s “The Bouncer.”

Drum & Bass legend and Charge Recordings boss Mampi Swift is dropping his History album in a couple of months and as a primer for that he’s giving away a tune from it called “Let’s Go!” The tune is a modern day twist on the 92 hardcore sound with in-your-face drums and those stabby 90s synths.

Like his Facebook page for the download link.

Here’s another preview for a tune on the album, The Silence.

Direct from Mister Bailey himself, via Intabeats:

Pre and post Sunandbass festival in Sardinia, A Sides and Bailey get together at a bar in San Teodoro town centre called La Posta to drop classic Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Rock, Pop and Rave. Pretty much anything goes. The La Posta Sessions are quickly becoming an important part of the festival as the perfect warm up and farewell for Sunandbass revellers each year.

  • 12/13/13--08:39: DFW Rave Audio
  • Something happened in my world this week and I think it’s pretty damn cool.

An old friend of mine from Dallas, Thomas Meyer, decided he wanted to try and map out the rather rich history of dance music in Dallas which dates back to the 80s. While he began compiling that information a Facebook group, Dallas Electronic History, quickly spawned to help crowd source a lot of the data. In no time more than a thousand people joined and began sharing information. People began uploading flyers, sharing photos, listing promoters, events, and correcting event locations…all of it happening organically.

Soon someone suggested that we start compiling a lot of the DJ sets from Dallas DJs and DJs that might’ve played in Dallas over the years, so one our SB family, Bill, jumped at the chance to create an audio archive. Thus DFW Rave Audio was born. It’s only been up for a few days and I expect it to grow and evolve exponentially over the next few months.

Check it out and grab some free music from Dallas’ history.

While going over a “Where Are They Now” article on Thump, I came across another article about AK1200 that was written by DJ DB. It chronicled some of Dave AK’s achievements in breaking breakbeat culture to the US. You wouldn’t know it now, but Orlando was a big spot for early hardcore and jungle thanks to Dave’s efforts and those early shows of his bear that out.

In addition to that skip down memory lane, DB also ripped a mix that AK put to tape from 1994. Click the link below to read the original article.

You can now watch Part 2 of Music Nation, Berkshire Goes Balearic, on Dazed.

Music Nation is a 5-part documentary series on Channel 4 about underground music culture in the UK. Part 1, Brandy & Coke, is also online and available to watch in-full.

Image from Dazed Digital, July 2012

UK acid house club culture, by photojournalist Dave Swindells. “This was taken in the middle of Tottenham Court Road at 3.30am on a Sunday morning early in July 1988. The impromptu party stopped traffic for a while.”
